KAVAN BALASURIYA

Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1992, Kavan Balasuriya stands as a pioneering artist, reshaping the boundaries of traditional art forms. His intricate narratives unfold through his innovative approach that works through drawing, engraving, and the interplay of light and shadow. Kavan's practice revolves around the concept of emergence within complex systems. With precision, he melds ink and aluminium foil, crafting gestural and geometric abstractions that captivate viewers. Aluminium foil, with its reflective nature, becomes his canvas, where movement meets stillness. Through etching and engraving, he conjures visual illusions, challenging the line between objective and subjective experience.

Kavan's work is influenced by his fascination with the intersection of art and architecture. He ingeniously transforms foil into an analogue pattern generator, tracing creases and folds to craft compositions resonating with depth. His repetition becomes an exploration, unveiling novel dimensions of creativity. Kavan earned his B.A. in Fine Art in 2014 from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.
